Contextual Studies Lecturer
Dr Michelle Jones is a Senior Fellow Advance HE, with twenty years’ experience as a senior lecturer, tutor and supervisor in the HE sector for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. She has extensive experience of course development, validation, and delivery. Her pedagogic specialism is design theory and contextualization.
She holds a BA (Hons) in Theatre Design from Nottingham Trent and an MA and Ph.D. in Design History and Material Culture from The Royal College of Art, London. Prior to her academic career she worked as a textile artist for theatre and film, firstly as Assistant Head of the Textile Department at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, London, then as a freelance practitioner.
At CSVPA Michelle currently holds a .5 position and is responsible for the theoretical and contextual elements of the two BA Hons courses in the Fashion Department. She is also Chair of the Teaching and Learning Working Group, and a member of the Academic Board.
She also holds a .5 position at Central Saint Martins, UAL in London, where she is Stage Two Theory Leader for the ten BA pathways for the Fashion, Jewellery and Textile courses. She also lectures on their MA Fashion Critical Studies and is currently embarking on PhD supervision.
In 2022 she published a monograph on ‘London Couture and the Making of a Fashion Centre’ with MIT Press: Cambridge Massachusetts. Her current academic research is focused on issues surrounding sustainability particularly in relation to dyes and the use of colour within Western design. Her current pedagogic research is focused on embedding social purpose within course structure and content.
